Not the screen itself, but very likely the filter housing. Foam and pulsing pressure are the signature of air being drawn into the suction side, and a filter cap that is cross-seated, a seal that has flattened or been displaced from its groove, or a housing distorted by over-tightening will all let air in without leaking a drop of liquid out. Check the cap and the seal before you go looking further down the line.
