Uniformity across the swath is the thing you are actually buying, and a mixed set works directly against it.

Can I clean a worn disc and keep using it?

Cleaning is worth doing and it fixes a real problem, but it is not the same problem. Washing dried mix out of the tooth roots restores how the liquid film spreads across the plate, and a disc that atomizes properly again afterward was dirty rather than worn. What cleaning cannot do is put back tooth material that has eroded away. If the edges are rounded against a new reference disc, no amount of soaking changes the geometry that does the shearing.

Do I need to change my rate settings after fitting fresh discs?

The rate itself is set by the liquid the system delivers, not by the disc, so your programmed rate does not change. What changes is where that liquid ends up, because finer, more uniform droplets deposit differently and penetrate the canopy differently than the coarse ones a worn disc was throwing. Run water-sensitive cards on the first job after the change and look at the deposit before you decide whether your speed and rate still suit the target.

Which way up does a double-layer disc go on the hub?

It is not symmetrical, and it will sit on the hub upside down while looking close enough to fool you, so decide before the old one comes off rather than after. Photograph the fitted disc from the side or put a wrap of tape on the upper face, then set it on the bench that way up and lay the new one next to it to confirm the two agree on which ring faces outward. If you have already lost track, compare the wear pattern: the face that met the liquid film is the one that shows it.
