The practical test is substitution: fit a known-good module, or move the suspect one to a known-good airframe if you run more than one aircraft. If the fault follows the module, the module is bad. If the fault stays with the aircraft, you are chasing the cable, the connector, or the board.

The picture came back once the aircraft warmed up. Is it still bad?

Treat it as failing. A picture that returns with temperature is telling you there is an intermittent internal connection, or moisture inside a unit that is supposed to be sealed. Either way it will fail again, and it will pick the flight where you need it most. Order the replacement while the aircraft is still usable rather than waiting for the module to quit in the middle of a spray window.

Should I replace the FPV signal cable at the same time?

Not automatically, but inspect it carefully while the nose is open, because it is the part most often damaged by whatever damaged the camera. Look for chafe through the outer jacket where the run crosses an edge, greening or white powder on the pins, and any sharp kink left by a previous repair. A marginal cable behind a new camera reproduces the original fault and costs you the same job twice.

What cleaner is safe on the lens cover?

Blow the loose grit off first, then use a proper lens cloth barely dampened with a lens-safe cleaner. Keep solvents, ammonia-based glass cleaner, fuel, and shop degreaser away from it. Those attack the coating on the cover and the elastomer seal around it, and once the coating is stripped the camera flares in bright sun for the rest of its life even though the glass underneath looks perfectly clear.

What should I check before the cover goes back on?

With the module fitted and the aircraft powered, confirm the picture is live, level, and correctly oriented before anything closes over it. Verify the cable keeps its original bend radius and is not trapped between the cover and the housing, because a pinched tail is the most common self-inflicted failure on this job. Close up, then check the picture one more time, since the pinch usually happens on the last step.
