The clip snapped and part of it is still in the airframe. What now?

Get the remains out before anything else. Broken clips normally leave the base sitting in its mounting, and any piece left loose inside the structure will travel until it lodges in a moving part or a connector. Work the pieces free with a plastic pick, not a drill or a screwdriver, and keep the mounting boss unmarked. Then account for what you removed against a whole part so you know nothing is still in there, and inspect the loom that was released.

Does it matter which way round the clip goes?

Yes, and it is easy to get wrong once the original is off. The opening should face away from anything that could push the loom out and away from a moving part like a hinge or a linkage, and the base has to sit on its mounting the way the airframe was designed for so the saddle presents the cable on its intended line.
