Lay both new parts against the pair you removed before fitting anything and match them by shape, depth, and sealing rim rather than by guessing from the media.
The generator lost power after a dusty day. Should I change filters or start diagnosing?
Change the filters first, then diagnose if the fault is still there. Intake restriction imitates both fuel and ignition faults closely enough to send people down long diagnostic paths, and it is the cheapest and fastest thing on the list to eliminate. Note whether the power loss came on gradually and worsened with heat and load, which points at restriction, or arrived as surging and cutting, which points elsewhere. Then check the clean side of the old primary for bypass before you throw it away.
Is there any harm in fitting a similar-looking aftermarket foam element instead?
There is, and the damage is invisible until it is expensive. What a filter stage does is defined by media grade and by how it seals, and a foam that looks equivalent can pass particle sizes the engine was never meant to see or restrict airflow enough to cost you output. The sealing rim matters just as much: a stage that does not seat into this housing correctly lets air around it entirely. On the one component that keeps every battery in rotation, this is not the place to experiment.
How often should these actually be changed on a working aircraft?
There is no hour figure worth quoting, because the variable is dust rather than time and the same set can go from clean to finished in a single day over dry worked ground. Build your own interval from what you find: inspect the outer stage at refuel stops when conditions are dusty, look at the primary against a light whenever the housing is open, and record what the filters looked like against the kind of work you had been doing. After one season you will know your own numbers, and they will be specific to your ground.
