To the DJI value, with a calibrated driver, in two or three passes across the pattern rather than around it. This is the joint people get wrong in both directions. Left loose, the pad frets and the board moves anyway. Pulled down hard, the pad is crushed at installation, has no travel left, and behaves like no pad at all from the first flight. Then confirm the board sits level with no rock before the cover goes on.

Can I use a foam pad or a rubber washer of the same thickness?

No. Thickness is the easiest property to match and the least important one here. The pad is specified for how it compresses and recovers, how it behaves at the temperature next to high-current hardware, and how it stands up to the chemicals that get into an agricultural airframe. A part that measures right in the wrong compound either flattens within hours or is too stiff to isolate anything, and this is a poor bay to experiment in.

I fitted a new pad and the fault came back inside a week. What did I miss?

Work back through the mechanical possibilities before you order electronics. The usual answers are a wire or tie trapped under the pad holding the board at an angle, a pad pinched or folded on installation, fasteners pulled past the specified torque so the pad has no travel, a standoff or insert that had already crushed, a connector not fully latched, or a bay that is still letting moisture in. Any one of those reproduces the original symptom exactly.
