A torn, deformed, oil-soaked, or badly seated element stops filtering while still looking installed, and unfiltered field air goes straight down the intake. That is how a generator picks up cylinder and ring wear inside a single dusty season. An element that cannot seal is not a degraded filter, it is no filter at all, and nothing about the generator's behavior will tell you before the damage is done.
The sealing face does as much work as the media, and it is the part operators overlook. Air takes the easiest path available, so any gap between the element and the housing becomes a bypass that carries unfiltered field air straight into the intake while the element sits there looking correctly installed. That is why a deformed frame, a flattened or set sealing bead, a warped housing lid, or a latch that is not pulling the cover down evenly matters as much as a torn pleat. A filter that cannot seal is not a partly working filter. It is no filter at all.
Rich running from a restricted intake does damage beyond the power loss operators notice first. Excess fuel fouls the spark plug, sooties the exhaust, and washes the oil film off the cylinder wall, and some of it ends up diluting the crankcase oil. The element is oil-soaked on the inner face rather than the outer one. That usually points back at crankcase breather carryover from an overfilled sump or sustained operation on a slope, not at a failed filter. Fix the cause or the new element will be soaked as well.

Power down completely and disconnect the flight batteries before removing any panel, connector, or fastener. Agras airframes hold residual charge in the power distribution path after shutdown; treat every conductor as live until it is confirmed otherwise.

What is the correct sequence for changing this element in the field?
Shut the generator down and let it cool. Brush or wipe the outside of the air-cleaner housing before you open it, because most engine contamination happens during filter service rather than between services. Open the cover so debris on top falls away from the intake, not into it. Can I blow the element out with shop air and reuse it?

Is it acceptable to run the generator briefly with no element while I wait on a replacement?

Field air around dry soil, crop residue, and propeller wash carries a very heavy dust load, and the abrasive particles that reach the cylinder do not come back out. Minutes of unfiltered running in that environment causes wear you pay for later in compression, oil consumption, and eventually an engine. Stop the generator and wait for the element rather than trading engine life for an hour of charging.
