If the connector has to be released for the sleeve to slide on, release it, and use the opportunity to inspect the pins while they are apart.

What killed the original sleeve, and how do I stop it happening again?

Three causes account for most of them. A sharp or worn edge at the pass-through, which you can feel with a fingertip and must deal with before fitting new rubber. A cable tie or clamp crushing the ribs, which concentrates every fold cycle at one point. And too little slack in the harness, so the sleeve is pulled taut each time the arm folds instead of flexing freely. Fix the cause or the new part follows the old one.

Should I use grease to help the sleeve slide on?

Not petroleum grease or oil. Those swell and degrade many elastomers, and the damage is slow enough that nobody connects it to an assembly done two months earlier. Clean water is enough for almost every fit and dries away leaving nothing behind. If a sleeve genuinely will not go on with water and steady hand pressure, stop and check that you have the right part and that nothing underneath is fouling it.

How can I be sure the new sleeve is properly seated?

Both flanges should be fully through the pass-through with the rim sitting in the groove all the way around, and the ribs should be evenly spaced rather than bunched to one side. Then cycle the arm by hand two or three times through a full fold and unfold and look again. A sleeve that creeps out of its pass-through during those cycles was never home, and it will be out again on the first flight.

Is this the same as the grommet at the motor end or the seal at the arm fold joint?

No. This one is the corrugated boot with a retaining flange at each end, sized to carry the arm ESC composite cable bundle through the arm structure. Motor-end grommets and fold-joint seals sit at different positions, have different shapes, and carry different loads. Identify the part by the position you are removing it from and by the pass-through it locks into, and order for that position specifically.

The sleeve looks fine but the rubber is hard. Is that a reason to replace it?

Yes, and it is the failure mode operators miss most often. A sleeve works by flexing at the rib valleys and absorbing the fold cycle so the cable does not have to. Rubber that has hardened from heat, ultraviolet exposure, and chemical contact has stopped absorbing anything and is passing that movement straight into the harness. Stretch the ribs open between your fingers. Fine cracks in the valleys mean it is done.
