Both. They have shared the same seasons of sun, chemical mist, and heat cycling, so the intact one is on the same clock and typically not far behind. Mixed-age protective hardware also means you stop checking the side you just replaced and stop thinking about the side you did not, which is exactly the one that then lets go. Replacing the pair keeps the protection even and gives you one inspection date to work from instead of two.
How should I wash the aircraft so I am not driving water past the covers?
Keep the pressure low, keep the wand back, and never aim a stream straight into a seam. Work across joints rather than at them, use cool water rather than hot, and rinse chemical off promptly so residue is not left to sit on the plastic and the seals. Then let the machine dry properly before it is covered or put away, because a sealed compartment closed up damp keeps working on the electronics long after the wash is finished.
