Impact energy reaches the joints before it reaches the boards, so the likely damage is a connector jarred partly off its seat or a fine antenna lead broken at the crimp inside its shell, where nothing is visible from outside. Open it on a clean bench, inspect every lead along its full length, reseat each connector square until it clicks, then repeat the fixed-distance check before deciding the modules are at fault.

Could a firmware update fix laggy control instead of new hardware?

Sometimes, and it costs nothing to rule out. Put both the aircraft and the controller on matching current firmware and repeat the same flight over the same ground. If the lag came in with an update, or only one end was updated, that is often the whole story. If the lag is repeatable at a fixed distance across firmware versions and follows the controller when it is flown against a different aircraft, you are looking at hardware.

Water got into my controller. Will new modules fix it?

Not on their own. Corrosion keeps working after the water dries, and whatever let the water in is still open. Find the path first: gasket condition, vent blockage, charge port and cover seals, and any cracked housing. Clean up the corrosion, deal with the seal, and only then fit the new pair. Modules installed into a controller that still leaks are on the same clock as the ones that just came out.
