My tank weight reads low by the same amount every time. Can I just calibrate it out?

You can, and if it is a genuine zero offset the calibration will hold across several loads. What matters is whether it comes back. Run the payload calibration your firmware provides, then check the reading over three or four full loads. If the offset returns within a day, or if the error grows as the tank fills rather than staying constant, you are papering over a real fault: something is sharing the load path, or the element has lost its span. Calibration cannot fix either of those.

How do I check the reading is honest without weighing scales?

Use water and arithmetic. Park level, empty and drain the tank, note the reported figure, then add a measured quantity of clean water from a container you trust and note it again. Add the same quantity a second time. What you are looking for is whether the two steps read the same size, and whether the number returns to where it started when you drain it back down. Errors that are constant at every step are a zero problem. Errors that grow with the load are a span problem.

Very unlikely. The most common way this part is killed is water driven past its seal by a pressure lance aimed at or near the mount or the cable entry. The symptom that follows is a zero that drifts as the machine warms in the sun and resets after it sits overnight. If that is what you are seeing, the element has moisture against the gauge and it will not dry back to health. Keep the lance off the weighing area and rinse it at low pressure from now on.
