The hose has seen the same chemistry, the same pressure cycling and the same UV as the fitting that just failed, and the ends have been stretched over barbs and squeezed under clamps for the life of the aircraft. Hose is cheap, the system is already open, and refitting a fresh splitter onto tired hose is how a repair turns into two repairs.

It only leaks when the pump is running. What does that tell me?

That it is a pressure dependent fault: a hairline crack that opens under load, a hose end that has stretched and no longer grips, or a clamp that has lost tension. Dry the fitting completely, run clean water at working pressure, and watch with a light. If the wet returns along the same fine line each time, the body is cracked. If it appears at the hose joint and moves when the hose is nudged, reseat the hose and clamp first.

The system surges and the nozzles spit, but I cannot find a leak anywhere. Why?

Because a leak on the suction side of the pump does not drip, it breathes. A crack or a loose barb upstream of the pump lets air in rather than letting liquid out, so there is nothing to see on the ground. Look for pressure that oscillates, flow readings that wander and foam building in the tank. Pressurise the suction side with clean water and inspect every junction between the tank and the pump.

How tight should the clamp be?

Tight enough that the hose cannot be twisted on the barb by hand, and no tighter. The clamp belongs over the barb body, seated where the fitting is designed to be squeezed, never out on bare hose behind the barb. Overtightening a worm clamp on soft tubing cuts a ring into it that will fail weeks later, well after everyone has forgotten the repair. Refit the same style of clamp the aircraft came with.

What is the safe way to get old hose off without damaging anything?

Slit it. Use a hooked blade to cut the hose lengthwise, working away from the fitting, then peel the hose off the barb. Never lever a screwdriver in between the hose and the barb, because that splits the barb root, and the barb root is where these fittings crack. Warm water helps a stubborn hose ease off, and it helps the new one go on without oil or grease that would contaminate the tank.

Can a cracked splitter be glued or patched to finish the day?

Do not plan on it. A fluid junction sees pressure cycling and constant vibration, and adhesive or tape on a moulded plastic body under those conditions fails without warning, usually with a full tank and always at the least convenient time. If the fitting is crazed or cracked it is finished. That is exactly why these are cheap enough to carry as spares in the truck rather than repair at the field edge.
