Rinse it out, test it under water by blowing backward, and look at the sealing face under good light. A clean unmarked face that seals is worth keeping. A scored ring, a swollen or hardened element, or a poppet that does not return crisply means the fitting is used up. Fix the filtration that scored it, then fit a new one.

Can I use a plain elbow if I cannot get the check valve version?

No. The two look similar and are not the same part.
