Does it really matter if I unplug things with the batteries in?
Yes. These paths hold residual charge after shutdown, and parting or mating a power connector under load draws an arc that pits the contact faces. A pitted contact is a resistive contact, it runs hot from then on, and it produces exactly the intermittent, load-dependent fault you were trying to fix. Disconnect the batteries, wait a few minutes, and then work.
The module got wet but the aircraft still sprays. Can I keep flying it?
Not with any confidence. Corrosion in a power bay is progressive: it works along conductors under the insulation and into connector mating faces, and it typically produces weeks of intermittent behavior before something stops for good. That failure will happen in the field rather than in the shop. Dry it out, inspect it properly, and treat a soaked module as a replacement.
What else should I check while the bay is open?
Every connector on the path, for corrosion and back-out; the harness, for chafe where it crosses an edge and for tension at the plug; the grommets, boots, and ties that keep water out and the loom in place; the mounting hardware and any insulator or interface under the module; and the plumbing above the bay, since a weeping joint over a power group explains a lot of intermittent faults.
